The smile bridle draws its name and design from the scold’s bridle, a Renaissance metal tool used for silencing and publicly humiliating transgressive individuals, particularly women who did not conform to societal norms.

Also called the mask of shame, this tool was made up of a curb plate that by pressing the tongue down, would prevent women from speaking, causing excessive salivation and pain in the mouth.Throughout this parallel, this work deconstructs the happiness imperative that shapes today's society.
